Global Lens 2010 Bringing Independent Foreign Films to Tampa Area

What: The Gasparilla International Film Festival (GIFF) is excited to collaborate with the Global Lens Initiative and the Tampa Museum of Art to bring the best independent foreign films to the Tampa Bay area. Global Lens 2010 is a prestigious series of films, which support unique and critically acclaimed cinematic works of independent filmmakers from all over the globe. 

 

Come join us on the second Thursday of every month for these upcoming films:

  • June 10 – Enrique Buchichio directs “Leo’s Room (El Cuarto de Leo)” where a troubled young man dreams of the future and explores his sexuality with the encouragement of an old friend and sympathetic therapist.

  • July 8 – “Becloud (Vaho)” is the story of three boyhood friends who reunite in Mexico City to overcome a tragedy that scarred their neighborhood and childhood years before.

  • August 12 – This Serbian war film “Ordinary People” deals with soldiers questioning the morality and consequences that come with being a soldier.

  • September 9 – “Ocean of an Old Man” is an Indian film that focuses on the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami where an elderly British schoolteacher must come to grips with his own loss as he searches for missing students.

  • September 23 – South African director Oliver Hermanus gives us “Shirley Adams,” where a single mother in the depressed neighborhood of Cape Flats contemplates her fate as she struggles to care for her paraplegic and suicidal son.

  • October 14 – “Masquerades (Mascarades)” takes place in an Algerian village, where a well-intentioned fib suddenly turns a gardener into a mogul forcing him to choose between happiness of his narcoleptic sister and his newfound celebrity.

 

  • November 11 – The Peruvian film “Gods (Dioses)” pertains to a wealthy industrialist’s working-class fiancée who plunges into the extravagance of her new life as her future stepchildren self-destruct in a series of attempts to escape their privileged upbringing.

  • December 9 – The Chinese film “The Shaft (Dixia de Tiankonk)” is three intertwined stories of a father, son, and daughter who fight to hold onto hope and family as they face the harsh realities of life in a poor western Chinese mining town.

Who: General admission is $8 and there is a special $5 price for GIFF members, seniors, students, and members of the Tampa Museum of Art.
