TAMPA - October 12, 2009 - The Gasparilla International Film Festival in conjunction with Brokenmold Entertainment is proud to present a special performance by acclaimed singer/songwriter Matt Butcher live in concert at the Market on 7th Ave in Ybor City on October 22. The show will benefit the Gasparilla International Film Festival and will be preceded by a screening of the independent film, Visioneers, starring Zach Galifianakis, who was most recently seen in The Hangover and the new series on HBO, Bored to Death. Tampa fusionists Poetry 'n Lotion will close out the evening.
"We are thrilled to have an artist of Matt's caliber playing at a GIFF event," said GIFF board member David Cox. "We set out this year to not only continue to our tradition of quality independent film programming, but also to reach out to artists in other disciplines."
In September, GIFF held a fundraiser at the Ritz in Ybor City where it auctioned off original works of art inspired by film and created by local artists.
"These events allow us to bring groups together that have common interests," said Cox.
Matt Butcher is an emerging 25 year old singer-songwriter who is quickly gaining critical acclaim for his debut album Me and My Friends. According to the Orlando Sentinel, “the Orlando singer-songwriter and his band, the Revolvers, specialize in evocative alt-country. In that realm, songs such as the title track and ‘Giving My Sadness a Name’ are as good as it gets.” Butcher resides in Orlando but has been a fixture in the Tampa Bay music scene. He was most recently seen in Tampa opening for the Avett Brothers at the Cuban Club in Ybor City.
Poetry ‘n Lotion are a local Tampa band who was recently named “best fusionists” and “best instrumentalists” in Creative Loafing’s 2009 Best of the Bay edition. According to CL's Leilani Polk, "Poetry n' Lotion incorporate elements of jazz, psychedelia, acoustic roots, and even metal into their sound." PNL can regularly be found playing a number of different venues around the Bay area and are currently working on a new album.
First time feature filmmaker Jared Drake makes his directorial debut with Visioneers. Set in the near future, the film takes an existential look at the corporate workplace and an employee, George Washington Winsterhammerman (Zach Galifianakis). Judy Greer, Missi Pyle, and James LeGros co-star in this existential black comedy featuring music by Tim DeLaughter of the Polyphonic Spree.(read more)
The event will be held at Demi’s Market on 7th located at 816 E. 7th Avenue, Ybor City. The screening will begin at 7pm followed by performances by Matt Butcher and Poetry ‘n Lotion beginning at approximately 9pm. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door or in advance at www.gasparillafilmfestival.com.
